A shop in Rathnapura keeping a stock of Rose-inged Parakeets has been raided successfully yesterday by a DWLC team led by Mr. Chamath Lakshman.
This bird is one of the five non-protected species of birds,as they are inclused as non-protected species according to provisions of Section 31(1) of the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance (FFPO) and as such, listed in Schedule iii.
However, this provision doen not make them totally unprotected as these so called”non-protected” species enjoy some degrees of protection under FFPO.
These are:
*Section 49 makes it mandatory that anyone who sell any wild animal needs a permit from the DWLC.
*Section 49A makes it mandatory to obtain a permit from the DWLC to keep any such animals in captivity.
Therefore,it s clear that any place that keeps non-protected birds can be raided,as it happened yesterday.
