Turtle Hatcheries – Legal Position

All turtles that come to Sri Lankan waters are Strictly Protected reptiles as per Section 30(2) of the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance.Hence it is illegal to take, keep in posession any turtle or egg. Therefore all turtle hatcheries are illegal if not permitted by the DWLC.
The permission for a turtle hatchery can be granted by the DWLC under provisions of Section 55 of the FFPO.That is,an act that is otherwise illegal can be given authorization if it helps in the conservation of a species. However, anyone who gets an authorization for a turrtle hatchery has to abide by the conditions given by DWLC.

If any hatchery is operated without permission,or acts in violation of conditions in the approval, they become offences under the FFPO.
