Purple Heron

This is one of the two largest resident herons found in Sri Lanka and is slightly smaller and of a slimmer build than the Grey Heron.
It is easily identified by the thinner neck which id brown on the sides.
Unlike the Grey Heron, this bird prefers to lurk among aquatic vegetation and takes steps slowly to hunt and is rather shy and retiring in habits.
