Spearfishing banned in Sri Lankan Waters

The used of Spear-guns,hand held spikes and spears in the fishing has been banned by an order made under Section 28 of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act and this order has been published in Gazette Extraordinary No:2008/31 of 0303.2017.
Accordingly the use of spear-guns or hand-held spears has been banned and the keeping in possession of any Spear-gun in a boat is also a prohibited act.
This banning of the use of Spear-guns has been proposed since 1979 and was never implemented.
A recent spate of incidents reported in Facebook showing Wrasses and Groupers being killed with spear-guns brought a renewed call to ban these destructive fishing methods to be banned.
Unlike during the past, this recent call has been heeded by the Fisheries sector. Thus,a long-needed prohibition is in force, which is seen as a positive step by us.
